Why We Love Emu Oil
At Bespoke we carry Thunder Ridge Emu Oil and incorporate it into many of our skin services. Let's talk about why we like this product so much!
The use of Emu Oil is traced back to Native Australian Aboriginees, who used it to treat the skin, scalp, hair, muscles, and joints. The oil is produced from honing down and refining the fat on the Emu bird. Because this product is not vegan, the ethicacy of a supplier is one of our top priorities. Thunder Ridge Emu Oil, the line we carry, is certified by the American Emu Association for ethical farming and production.
Emu oils is not like other oils, the first difference is the size of the particles. Because emu oil has incredibly small particles, the oil is much better at penetrating the skin. When an oil and penetrate the skin well, it enhances your healing as well as its carrier potential: if you mix other essential oils with emu oil, those oils will be carried deeper into the skin than if they were used on their own, or mixed with other oils. Because it can hold and help other oils absorb, it is called a carrier oil. Other carrier oils can be coconut oil, jojoba, or avocado oil.
The absorption is key to why we love emu oil: it doesn't just sit on top of the skin and clog pores, it really sinks into the skin and moisturizes on a deep level, healing faster and preserving skin's moisture for longer.
On its own, emu oil is high in oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acids, and antioxidants. These components help fight inflammation, dry skin, high cholesterol, and many other ailments.
There are a number of uses for emu oil, and because we carry an edible-grade oil, those uses grow even further. Research on uses can be found everywhere on the internet, but the majority of the uses we're included are from Healthline author Kathleen Pointer, and reviewed by Dr. Debra Rose Wilson. Supplemental information was gathered from Thunder Ridge's website, which hosts many resources on emu oil benefits.
First, you can use the emu oil on your skin anywhere to moisturize and cure dry spots, cracked or flaking skin, rough patches, or any other similar ailments. This oil is safe and even recommended to use on your face and scalp. Emu oil helps skin conditions like rashes, eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Using emu oil on your nail beds/cuticles promotes healthy nail growth.
Alongside hydrating dry skin, the emu oil helps prevent and reduce the appearance of aging. The moisturizing properties also aid collagen production, which keeps your skin plump! Because of the many antioxidants in emu oil, it prevents and treats aging spots due to oxidative stress like pollutants. Because of the edible grade, it is safe to use around the eyes.
A main draw of the emu oil is the anti-inflammatory properties. Emu oil can help reduce internal inflammation from ailments like inflammatory bowel disease, joint inflammation, and aid in the treatment of absorptive issues, gastric emptying and intestinal transit. Topically, you can apply emu oil to sore muscles to aid in reducing swelling, pain, and rheumatism.
Because of emu oil's linoleic acid levels, it helps promote healing of wounds, scars, and sun damage. Next time you get a sunburn, cut, bruise, or contact burn, add some emu oil to your creams and ointments for extra healing power. Adding this will decrease healing time as well as lessen scarring and promote hair growth around the wound--which is good for any wounds on the scalp, hairline, or facial hair wher scarring would prevent hair growth.
There are no side effects to emu oil, it is safe for long-term use, and is a natural, holistic way to treat all of your ailments. Emu oil is a skin and body staple that belongs in your medicine cabinet!
